A child cannot comprehend why she couldn't receive the attention she so desperately desired. Why tugging at the hem of mother's shirt earned her a "not now" and glimpses caught of her father would always be between him going to bed and leaving for work in the morning. Her parents worked themselves to their bones in order to be able to build a new life, start fresh in this new land. A land in which they could not find the same comforts, the same sense of community, as they had with their tribe. It was a challenge.People aren't 'good' or 'bad', Ava understands that now. People are just people, flawed and doing their best. But as a child, it was much easier to categorize the world into good and evil. Out on the streets, the young miqo'te girl found friendships that would hold steadfast for a lifetime—but she also stumbled across those who would harm her or those she cared about just because they could. Just because they had something to gain, be it coin or the fulfillment of a selfish desire. She had seen it all. She knew what people were capable of. She had been at the receiving end once too much.And what was a young child to do but wish they had the power to change things? The beatings she took, the dirt she was pushed into, the blades that had cut her skin—all in an attempt to protect the ones she loved and make herself be seen. Her friends, fellow forgotten children, who had it far worse than her. And Ava, she often could do nothing but watch it happen. Watch, weep, and wish for it to be different.It eventually would. She would be different.And by the gods did she relish in it....but she was a fool to think that she was the exception, that she could control it.
